Bridging the acculturation gap: Parent-child relationship quality as a moderator in Mexican American families.

The authors examined the degree to which disparities in parent and child acculturation are linked to both family and child adjustment. With a sample of 1st- and 2nd-generation Mexican American children, acculturation and parent-child relationship quality at 5th grade, and parent-child conflict, child internalizing, and child externalizing at 7th grade were measured. Acculturation gaps with fathers were found to be related to later father-child conflict as well as internalizing and externalizing outcomes. Many of the associations between father-child acculturation gaps and outcomes were moderated by the child's report of the relationship quality between the child and his or her father. Father-child acculturation gaps were associated with negative outcomes only when children reported a poor relationship with their fathers. Cold water stress abolishes hyperactivity produced by cortical suction lesions without altering noradrenergic depletion.

Through the 30-day postoperative period following focal right hemisphere cortical suction lesions, lesioned and sham-operated control male Sprague-Dawley rats were placed in cold water for 5 min either 4 times at weekly intervals, once during the 1st postoperative week, or not at all. Results indicate different effects of the swim on lesioned and control Ss. Stress at weekly intervals produced hyperactivity in controls but weekly stress in lesioned Ss blocked the development of their expected hyperactivity. A single stress experience occurring 1 wk postoperatively was also sufficient to block the development of hyperactivity in lesioned Ss. Stress, although affecting behavior, did not alter the pattern of norepinephrine depletions in lesioned Ss. (19 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)

Economic Restructuring in the Zambian Copperbelt: Local Responses in Ndola

Since 2002, Zambia has experienced a decentralisation of powers from central government to local level. Accompanying this shift towards decentralisation, local economic development (LED) planning emerged in several urban centres. The aim in this article is to examine one facet of emerging LED planning in Zambia, analysing local responses towards economic restructuring of Copperbelt Province. The specific focus is the city of Ndola, which experienced economic decline from the early 1990s. The paper highlights the weaknesses and limitations of municipal-led interventions for LED and documents the expansion of community-led local responses to economic decline as expressed in the growth of urban cultivation.

The Collection and Analysis of Pre-evacuation Times Derived from Evacuation Trials and Their Application to Evacuation Modelling

This paper presents data relating to occupant pre-evacuation times from university and hospital outpatient facilities. Although the two occupancies are entirely different, they do employ relatively similar procedures: members of staff sweep areas to encourage individuals to evacuate.However the manner in which the dependent population reacts to these procedures is quite different. In the hospital case, the patients only evacuated once a member of the nursing staff had instructed them to do so, while in the university evacuation, the students were less dependent upon the actions of the staff, with over 50% of them evacuating with no prior prompting. In addition, the student pre-evacuation time was found to be dependent on their level of engagement in various activities.
